The biggest challenge for most project managers is NOT to make a plan but to communicate. That is why the first tool a project manager should learn to use is a communication tool and next a scheduling tool. This is why a simple Wiki (which is open source, thus free to install, you can even have it hosted for free if you just want to give it a try, the possible Wiki applications are: MediaWiki - which is the engine behind Wikipedia and PBWiki which is a very simple and easy to use engine- as easy as making a Peanut Butter sandwich) with a list of projects and a short project charter per project is the very first step in this communication.
